Description:

The use of telehealth in physiotherapy practice has rapidly expanded since the COVID-19 pandemic.  

In this online course, presenters will share research findings, online resources, and clinical experiences to help develop your knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide high-quality care via telehealth.  

This online course is brought to you by the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA).

 

Objectives:

After this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the barriers and enablers to telehealth for physiotherapists and patients
  2. Understand the value of, and be able to integrate the use of the Musculoskeletal Telehealth Toolkit into clinical practice. 
  3. Describe some of the evidence for telehealth in musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice 
  4. Apply practical tips for the management of low back pain, shoulder, and achilles injuries in clinical practice

 

Speaker Bio's: 

 

Allison Ezzat (Live presenter)

Dr. Allison Ezzat is a physiotherapist and postdoctoral research fellow at La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Allison holds a Canadian Institutes for Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship and leads research using implementation science to improve access to first line care for people with osteoarthritis. This includes leading projects examining the implementation of telehealth in musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice from physiotherapist and patient perspectives. She also continues to work part-time clinically with British Columbians via telehealth. 

 

Danilo de Oliveira Silva (Moderator)

Dr Danilo de Oliveira Silva is a Physiotherapist currently working as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the La Trobe Sport & Exercise Medicine Research Centre. Danilo has more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and is an editor of Journal of Sport Rehabilitation and Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport. During his PhD, Danilo led the development of a web-based platform to facilitate the delivery of education and exercise-therapy for young adults with kneecap pain.

 

Michelle Cottrell (Live presenter)

Michelle has a clinical background as a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and currently works within a research capacity at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. She obtained her PhD in 2020 where her thesis focused on the implementation and evaluation of telehealth as an additional method of service delivery within an existing physiotherapy-led screening service for patients referred to a tertiary public hospital with MSK-related spinal conditions. Her research continues to focus on the incorporation of telehealth into existing clinical practices across a spectrum of Allied Health services provided by tertiary public hospital facilities.  

 

JP Caneiro (Live or video clip TBC)

Dr. JP Caneiro has over 17 years of experience as a clinician, researcher and lecturer on the field of musculoskeletal pain management. He has published over 40 research papers and presented his work in key conferences across the globe.

He is an emerging leader on the field of chronic pain, particularly in the management of back pain and osteoarthritis. Dr JP Caneiro consults three days per week at Body Logic in Perth, Western Australia where he reviews complex musculoskeletal pain disorders, in special lower back and knee pain.

 

Peter Malliaras (Live or video clip TBC)

Peter Malliaras is a physiotherapist and researcher from Melbourne, Australia specializing in tendinopathy. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Monash University Physiotherapy Department and involved in multiple funded tendinopathy research projects in Australia and internationally.

His research focuses on understanding pain and neuromuscular impairments, and clinical trials testing the efficacy of exercise and other interventions in tendinopathy. Peter maintains a strong clinical focus, specializing in difficult tendinopathy cases and regularly consults to elite athletes
